Shipping company optimises heavy lifts with new load cell system

When a Danish shipping company had to get its cranes approved by the Danish Maritime Authority for securing heavy lifts in the offshore wind energy industry, it contacted the Danish company, Vetec A/S.

 

In close collaboration, Vetec A/S developed and manufactured a complete weighing- and overload system, which consisted of three parts. The purpose was that the crew easily, safely and efficiently could make sure that all the lifts occurred in the most optimal way, so that the projects could be executed with maximum efficiency and minimal risks.  

 

The first part of the system consisted of two load pins, which was installed in the ship’s two 125 tons A-Frame cranes. The two load pins were connected to two small displays in the technical room and two large displays on the deck, in order for the crew to constantly be able to follow the lift.

 

The second part of the system consisted of load cells for the large maritime crane, which consisted of a 60 tons main hoist and a 10 tons auxiliary hoist. The load cells were connected to multiple displays that were placed in the hoist engine room, control cabin and on the deck.   

 

The last part of the system consisted of a wireless remote control with a built-in display. The crew was able to operate the crane with the remote control anywhere on the ship. In addition, it was also able to read off the crane boom length and the weight on the main hoist and the auxiliary hoist. Moreover, the crew also used two 125 tons dynamometers to adjust and test the cranes.

 

The complete system is a combination of load cells, displays, dynamometers and a remote control. All the lifts are done in the most safe and efficient way, so that the crew and the crane operator have the best conditions for executing the projects in the harsh offshore environment.

CRANE LOAD CELL SYSTEM SECURES LIFT OF FLOATING DOCK

Crane Load Cell System:

When a floating dock sank in an industrial port in Denmark, the shipping company J. A. Rederiet was assigned the job to lift the sunken floating dock safely from the sea.

 

The shipping company contacted the Danish firm Vetec A/S, which specialises in the development of load cell systems for various industries such as the offshore industry.

 

Vetec developed a complete load cell system that consisted of two custom-made load pins and two displays. The load pins were installed in the two cranes and connected to the displays. Thereby, the crew was able to get a precise overview of the lift and secure that the two cranes lifted equally and would not be overloaded.

 

Furthermore, in order to get the optimum lift, the shipping company used Vetec’s 125 ton dynamometer to calibrate the crane before the lift.

 

The sunken floating dock is now safely removed from the industrial port, and the ship containing Vetec’s system now solves similar tasks, where heavy objects need to be lifted up from the sea.

Load Cell System optimises Offshore Wind Turbine Project

When an offshore company installed cables in the new wind turbine towers near the English coast, the company wanted to optimise the work processes and the safety.

 

By being able to release the right amount of cable, the company would avoid costly damages and make the process more efficient.

 

Therefore, the company contacted Vetec that specialises in load cell systems and, among other things, develops systems for the offshore and wind turbine industry.

 

The Load Cell System

In close collaboration with the company, Vetec developed and produced a load cell system that consisted of a load pin that measured the force in the cables from a winch in the wind turbine tower. The load pin was connected to two displays and two computers that ran a custom-made software. These components were located in two offshore suitcases, and one was left in the wind turbine tower, and the other one on the ship.

 

The wireless connection between the ship and the wind turbine made it possible to automatically follow the constant force in the cables, both from the ship and the wind turbine tower.

 

Before the development of the new system, all the data had to be collected manually and radio contact between the ship and the wind turbine was required. Now the system has made the work processes more simple and safe, while lowering costs.

Weighing System completes Full Automatic Big Bag System

Weighing System:

The competitiveness of modern industrial companies depends to a great extent on their ability to automate and optimise their work processes.

 

Greater efficiency and lower costs were also the goal, when a Danish crane company wanted to develop a full automatic big bag system, where a crane was able to lift, empty, throw away, and pick up a new big bag without any manual help.

 

In order to be able to develop the system, the company collaborated closely with the Danish company Vetec, which specialises in the development of weighing systems for cranes and other lifting gear.

 

The resulting weighing system consisted of a load pin, a transmitter and a receiver. The system was able to measure the weight on the crane, and thereby tell the crane when to move on to the next step in the process.

 

The automated work processes did not only make the company more efficient, it also increased the safety, because human mistakes no longer were able to affect the system.

Offshore Load Cell System for Ships

When a liquid pressure gas ship lays off the dock and offloads its gas, it needs to be sure that the ropes are safely tied to the dock.

 

Vetec’s load cell system can measure the pull in the ropes, and thereby tell if the ship is safely docked.

 

The system consists of:

- Two load pins
- One remote control or a display

 

The pull in the ropes can be shown on a big display or a small display on a remote control.

 

The advantages of the system are that the crew quickly can get an overview of whether or not the ship is safely docked before they offload the gas.

 

In addition, they can also quickly react, if it turns out that the ship is not safely docked any more.

Force Transducer System for two Overhead Travelling Cranes

When a crane company needed to lift an object that weighed 57t with two overhead travelling cranes that each was able to lift 30t, the company used a force transducer system from Vetec.

 

The force transducer system

The system consisted of:
- Two displays
- Two load pins
- One remote control

 

The system was able to measure the weight on the two overhead travelling cranes. The weights on the two cranes were then shown on each of the two displays. Furthermore, the remote control could control the crane.

 

The advantages of the system were increased workplace safety and efficiency, due to the fact that the solution gave a precise overview of the lift. In addition, it also made sure that the two cranes lifted equally and didn’t overload.
